Need It Yesterday – Tips For Making Deadlines

There are so many tasks and projects that it’s often hard to keep track of due dates. It’s important to stay on top of your work and meet your deadlines. Here are 6 sure-fire ways to meet your targets.

Calendar it: We have calendars to schedule appointment and meetings, but they are also a great way to schedule your projects.  When you get an assignment – decide how long it will take. Then schedule the time on your calendar to actually do the work. Give yourself a time buffer in case your estimate for the task length runs over.

Prioritize: Review the work you need to accomplish and decide on priority. Try to focus on the most important items first or something that critically needs your attention. You may be required to provide information promptly because someone is waiting for it in order to continue their work. Or, are you waiting for someone else to finish an assignment before you can begin?

Low hanging fruit:  Is there something that you can do really quickly to check it off your list? By picking these items – your To Do List will definitely be shorter. Don’t get sidetracked – make sure you have time to work on the larger, more difficult tasks.

Just say no:  If you help your nephew with his school project, will you still complete the major report your manager needs? It’s important to realize your time limitations and say No if you don’t have the capacity to handle the task. It’s better to say no up front, than to get stuck unable to handle the workload.

Don’t procrastinate.  If you set aside time to work – then work. Concentrate on what you need to accomplish, buckle down, and get cracking.  It’s easy to let your mind wander and surf the net, but it’s important to stay focused. Keep the task simple without adding additional items that might be nice to have.  You are on a deadline, remember.

Ask for help.  Superman has Lois Lane, just as Batman has Robin. If you think you aren’t going to make the deadline, ask for assistance.  Others are willing to pitch in as long as you give them enough time to contribute.

In today’s office environment, we all work on deadlines. We function as a team to complete projects and due dates are an important factor in finishing tasks. With these tips you should be able increase productivity by planning your time accordingly and avoid missing the target dates.
